Vacation Bible School

We had a GREAT vacation bible school this summer.  Thanks to all who volunteered!  Next year will be even bigger and better!!

Appalachia Service Project

A Christian ministry, open to all people, that fosters human development by addressing the house needs of Central Appalachia repairing homes for 400-500 low-income families.  Our goal is to make homes warmer, safer, and drier for families in need, while offering transformational experience for families, volunteers and staff alike.  The planning phase for the Appalachia Service Project Summer 2009 mission trip has begun. We will send ASP Headquarters the expected number of volunteers/ teams.  While ASP is a youth oriented mission project, we are also looking for adults to chaperone and drive.  It is recommended to have one adult male and one adult female per team.  Each team consists of a minimum of four and a maximum of seven people.  We are anticipating four teams again this year, and possibly more.   Any youth or adults interested in participating, please contact Gary Cox.  For more information on Appalachia Service Project, go to www.asphome.org.

Food Drive (HOPE)

Look for the shopping cart in the hallway near the sanctuary.  The need for food donations for the HOPE food pantry is great.  Over the next several months please remember to bring in a food donation.  Donations can be placed in the shopping cart, which will be available after each of the morning services.  God has blessed us; let us show this love and gratitude to others in need.  The listed foods are in short supply:  Canned Goods, Cereal, Macaroni & Cheese, Canned Tuna, Peanut Butter and Pasta Sauce.

LPUMC Clothes Closet
Our church owns and operates the LPUMC Clothes Closet. The Clothes Closet is run by volunteers from the church. We are able to provide free clothes to the needy in the community. The clothes closet is located in the basement of the church and is open every Monday & Friday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Special relationships are forged while performing God's work for our fellow man.

There is a shortage of men's summer clothing in the Clothes Closet.  Particular items requested are men's summer weight/all season pants, including khakis, dress slacks and blue jeans; men's shorts, shoes, and t-shirts.  All types of clothing, including shoes are also needed for boys.

Prison Ministry

This group ministers to men and women in the Leonardtown Detention Center.  There are opportunities available to be trained for prison ministry and to participate quarterly or more often, in various settings such as group seminars, prayer meetings or one-on-one meetings. At Christmas, gifts are collected and delivered to children of the detainees.  Contact Kim Swann for more information.

Celebrate Recovery

Through fellowship with others, we celebrate God's healing power in our lives.  This experience allows those who work through the program to experience profound life change and freedom from their hurts, hang-ups and habits. Opportunities available for people to lead small groups. Meetings held every Tuesday at the church from 7-9 p.m.

Agape Club

This is a special needs ministry for the handicapped.  Through music, group discussion, games, fellowship, food and fun all the participants feel the spirit move.  ALL are WELCOME!! Meet at LPUMC the 2nd Friday each month at 6:00 p.m.

Bikers for Christ (BFC)

BFC is a motorcycle ministry that uses the motorcycle as a media to reach out to others.  BFC is a great way for motorcycle riders to get together and enjoy the freedom of the road and spread the word of God.  BFC has a weekly meeting at the The Mission on Great Mills Road every Friday at 7:00 p.m.  We also do special rides and support ministries and those in need in the local area.

Sewing Seeds of Kindness

This ministry is beginning a large quilting project and is in need of quality crafting fabric (100% cotton quilting fabric).  Other sewing notions are also needed.  If you would like to make a donation, there will be a basket in the hallway marked "Sewing Seeds of Kindness".  This ministry is for people who love to sew and quilt.  Carol will happily teach those who want to learn.  If you have any questions or would like to join this ministry, please call Carol Barton at (301) 475-6296.

Blood Drives

LPUMC hold Blood Drives every third Thursday of the month in the Fellowship Hall.  Blood supplies are extremely low at this time.  If you would like to donate, please call 1-800- GIVE-LIFE.

St. Mary's Caring

Two teams from our church cook and serve meals to all who are hungry.  A hot breakfast and lunch is prepared the 2nd Saturday each month from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the soup kitchen, located at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Church on Great Mills Road.  Contact Lynn Baker if you would like to help.

Blankets of Love Ministry

We crochet blankets for Sierra House (local temporary home for troubled teenage girls), Hughesville women's shelter (temporary home for battered women and their children), Pregnancy Care Center, Crossroads of Southern Maryland (new shelter for families), and ACTS (A Community That Shares) Inc. We also crochet baby blankets and sweater sets for babies in the congregation when they are baptized.  The group meets at the church on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m.

Homeless Support

We try to meet the physical needs of the homeless in our community by providing tents, sleeping bags, blankets, flashlights, clothing and other needed supplies.  We foster relationships of trust with the homeless community and strive to be a place where they feel safe and come for assistance, council and information.

Christmas in April

We organize a team to help the local chapter of Rebuilding Together in St. Mary's county, a national volunteer organization that in partnership with the community, rehabilitates the homes of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and disabled, so that they may live in warmth, safety, and independence.  Meals and beverages are also provided to the team.

Community Mission Fund

This pastor's discretionary fund provides financial assistance to members of our congregation and to the Lexington Park community to meet emergent and critical needs.  funding for the Community Mission Fund comes from a special "above and beyond" offering taken on communion Sundays during worship.  Requests for assistance are administered through the church office.

Evangelism

We "equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12).  Evangelism involves both personal witness and public proclamation.  Through bible studies, such as Way of the Master and Being a Contagious Christian, and workshops, we equip the body of Christ to spread the gospel.  We share the gospel and our faith through acts of welcoming, belonging, disciple making, personal relationships and testimony.
